Anyone running bigger tires (33+) sizes should really do this mod for increased braking performance and safety. I also feel safer running a c-clip D35 axle which can't just come walking out of the tube now. My rear disc brake conversion gave me a ton more stopping power after I removed the o-ring/seal from the proportioning valve per article at Stu Olson's Jeep Site. When you find a nice clean set on a Grand Cherokee make sure you also grab the emergency brake cables, brake lines, and mounting hardware from each side because you will need them for a clean easy swap. Since we live in dry Southern California my set had only superficial rust not like the pictures in Stu's article. I did do lots of brake bleeding and adjust the e-brake all the way in because the e-brake shoes needed replacing but that could wait until next payday. The job was problem free and took about 4 hours including time to clean and paint everything up nice and pretty! After spending all day salvage yard hopping we found Ecology Auto Parts in Rialto seemed to have the best selection, all the parts cost me about $100. Also I should mention this can be swapped over to a Dana 44 with a couple spacers from the dealership.

I wonder if this could be done to a YJ? Even though I have a 1993 wrangler (c-clip axle) 3:07, it is gone. I have a 1989 D35 axle now (non c-clip) 4:10 rear end.

Good question, this may take some research or maybe coming over so we could inspect and measure the axle mount and backing plates, I still have my drum brake setup sitting in the garage for comparison, are you in the Palmdale/Lancaster area?

Mark

Close. I am in Hesperia. Palmdale is 30-45min from me.

Sounds good! I'll keep you posted. Have a few things to "finish" first
